Dr. Blessing Imafedon, a gynaecologist, on Monday said the failure rate of “withdrawal method”, a commonly used birth control method, is high.
Imafedon, of Imaf Clinic and Maternity, Lugbe, Abuja, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He said the method required no additional hormones or devices but was largely dependent on mere impeccable timing and a lot of luck.
He said: “Couples who have great self-control, experience and trust may use the pull out (withdrawal) method more effectively.
“Men who use the pull out method must be able to know when they are reaching the point in sexual excitement when ejaculation can no longer be stopped or postponed.
“If you cannot predict this moment accurately, withdrawal will not be as effective.”
However, Imafedon said even if a man pulled out in time, pregnancy could still happen.
Imafedon said it has been established that pre-ejaculate or pre-cum can pick up enough sperm left in the urethra from a previous ejaculation to cause pregnancy.
He said if a man urinates between ejaculations before having sex again, it would help clear the urethra of sperm and may increase the effectiveness of withdrawal.
He said: “The method does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases unless the use of condom or female condom to reduce the risk of infection.
“The pull out method is safe, simple and convenient.
“Women and men like it because it can be used to prevent pregnancy when no other method is available.”
Imafedon said although there were no medical or hormonal side effects, the method was not recommended for teens and sexually inexperienced men.
Imafedon said the other forms of contraceptives such as condom, diaphragm or female condom was most effective for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.
According to him, withdrawal is the world’s oldest way to practice birth control, saying that most couples worldwide relied on the pull out method.
