Nigeria to benefit from US $5b terrorism fund

Nigeria is expected to be one of the countries to benefit from a $5 billion “terrorism partnership fund” to be announced on Wednesday (today) by President Barack Obama of the United States of America.
The cash will help countries in the Middle East, Africa and East Asia.
Obama will announce the plan in a speech at the US Military Academy in West Point.
However, the Secretary of State, John Kerry, announced the $5 billionn cash plan on ‘CBS This Morning’, saying US foreign policy needs to reflect a “rapidly changing, more complex world where terrorism is the principal challenge”.
Already enthralled in a major insurgency battle with Boko Haram, Nigeria is presently enjoying support from the US in its fight to curtail the militants.
About 80 American service men are currently embedded in Chad where they are providing surveillance support for the Nigerian military in its quest to curtail the insurgents and find the over 200 girls abducted last month from Chibok Girls Secondary School in Borno State.
Britain has also sent its state-of-the-art surveillance plane, the Sentinel, to join in the search, operating from Accra, Ghana.
So far despite their best efforts, nothing concert has come up in the search.
Obama, when he takes to the podium at 1000 local time (1400 GMT) at West Point in New York, will try to recast US foreign policy as one which acts on a platform of international consensus.
A White House official said: “He will lay out why the right policy is one that is both interventionist and internationalist, but not isolationist or unilateral.”
The President will set out how events in Ukraine, Iran and Syria fit into his vision and how al-Qaeda and other radical groups now pose a threat “from South Asia to the Sahel”, the official added.
