The Lagos State Police command has arrested a 64-year-old man suspected to have specialised in using fake Certificates of Occupancy to stand as a surety for unsuspecting accused persons.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Ngozi Braide, made this known on Tuesday while parading the suspect before newsmen in Lagos.
Braide said that the suspect was arrested on August 7 after presenting a fake C of O to stand as a surety for a retired navy captain.
She said that the retired captain was being detained over an alleged N40 million fraud.
The police spokesperson said that the suspect claimed to be a relative of the retired navy officer.
Braide said: “The officer in charge of the unit investigating the case suspected that the C of O and information presented were not genuine.
“He ordered his men to investigate the man’s claims.
“It was discovered that the C of O, with address No. 29, Alhaji Bello Street, Off Pipeline, Idimu, Alimosho, Lagos, was fake.
“The suspect confessed to the crime.
“I advise members of the public to beware of fake sureties.”
