27-year-old man sentenced to three months imprisonment for dangerous driving

A Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old commercial driver, Ibrahim Mohammed, to three months imprisonment for dangerous driving.
The accused had been arraigned in court on May 27 on a three count charge of dangerous driving, driving without a valid driver’s licence and causing grievous hurt.
However, the matter was adjourned till Tuesday (today) for ruling after the accused pleaded guilty to the charges.
The Police Prosecutor, Haruna Azekpili, had told the court at the last sitting that Malam Musa Lawal of Sarkin Hausawa Minna reported the matter at the station on May 18.
Azekpili said the complainant alleged that the accused, a resident of Bosso Low Cost, was driving his Toyota Corolla car with registration number AG 512 SUL along Paiko Road when he knocked down his son.
The prosecutor said the victim was lying critically unconscious at the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Specialist Hospital, Minna.
He said the offences contravened Section 18 and Section 7 subsection 1 of the Road Traffic Act, to which the accused pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
The prosecutor thereafter urged the court to try him summarily in line with Section 157 of the criminal procedure code.
In her ruling, Magistrate Hafsat Abdullahi sentenced the accused to pay a fine of N15,000 for the first offence or serve a three months prison term in the event of a default.
Abdullahi ordered him to pay a fine of N5,000 for the second charge or serve one month imprisonment to run concurrently with the first sentence.
She also ordered the accused to pay N80,000 as compensation towards the medical bill of the victim.
