The Vice Chancellor of the Ibrahim Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai, Professor Ibrahim Kolo has said that the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigeria Universities has taken measure to curb the purchase of honorary degrees by politicians and businessmen who do not deserve such honour.
Professor Kolo stated this on Thursday in Minna, while speaking with journalists, adding that the issue has been discussed at the Keffi meeting of the committee and decision taken to forestall such development.
“It was brought to the attention of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigeria Universities that the manner in which some universities were beginning to award degrees to those who do not deserved them was becoming un-becoming.
“In order words people were being given awards not for their tangible contributions to the university or the society but on the basis of what they can offer to the university”, he said.
Kolo explained that the committee wanted to strop such university from falling into the abuse of the award of Doctorate Degrees, adding that “when somebody is awarded a doctorate degree in the university it should be in recognition of his selfless service and tangible contribution not necessarily money, that individual has done to the university”.
On why Nigeria Universities are rated low in comparison with others universities in the world, Professor Kolo explained that universities take time to grow, adding that most of the world class universities are over 400 years old and have developed over the period.
“You cannot compare such old universities with those that are barely 10 years old”, he said, adding that the foundation for the greatness of IBBU has been laid and that in the next 50 years management will continue to build on the foundation to make it a world class university”.
