Unity schools association calls for closure of FGC, Maiduguri

The Unity Schools Old Students Association on Thursday called for the closure of the Federal Government College in Maiduguri, Borno State.
President-General of USOSA, Malam Muhammad Nuhu-Koko, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
NAN recalls that the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday announced the shutting down of five Federal Government colleges in North East “high risk areas”.
The schools listed were Federal Government Girls College, Munguno, Borno State; Federal Government College, Potiskum, Yobe State; and Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State.
Others shut were the Federal Science and Technical College Lassa, Borno State; and Federal Science and Technical College, Michika, Adamawa State.
Nuhu-Koko, who expressed the association’s happiness at the closure of the schools, however, faulted the decision by the government to leave out FGC, Maiduguri.
He said: “We do not understand the rationale behind the decision to allow FGC, Maiduguri to function in that dangerous zone.
“Even a military barracks in that town was attacked.
“What is the guarantee that the school is safe?
“Parents are tired of their children being slaughtered like chickens and not even respect is accorded their memory.
“In civilised countries when such tragedies occur, national mourning is declared, flags fly at half mast, indicating a display of public grief.”
The president, who is also an FGC, Kano old boy, therefore, appealed to the government to reconsider its stance and close down FGC, Maiduguri “to spare us the agony of another massacre of our kids”.
He said the association would raise a memo immediately to Wike to express its concerns.
“We are not convinced that the school is secure and we believe that is the general concern of all Nigerians,” Nuhu-Koko said.
USOSA had, at a news conference on the killing of students of FGC Buni Yadi in Yobe State in February, called for the immediate closure of all federal colleges in the North Eastern states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa.
