UK death toll nears 1,000 daily as Boris Johnson walks in hospital

The death toll from the Coronavirus Disease in the United Kingdom rose to a daily figure of nearly 1,000 for the first time since its outbreak in the country on Friday.
This came amid the cheering news that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was able to walk in the hospital, also on Friday, barely 24 hours after leaving the intensive care unit of St Thomas Hospital, London.
This was revealed by a Downing Street spokesman, who said: “The Prime Minister has been able to do short walks, between periods of rest, as part of the care he is receiving to aid his recovery.
“His thoughts are with those affected by this terrible disease.”
In the country, 980 persons were confirmed dead in the latest report on the COVID-19, bringing to nearly 9,000 the number of fatalities.
The number of those who have contracted the disease went up to about 74,000.
The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said: “We never forget that behind this number, behind each one is a name, a loss and a family that will never be the same again.
“We all share a responsibility to tackle this virus, first and foremost by staying at home.”
