Traditional rulers under Gusau Emirate Council in Zamfara State have raised N3.4 million to support the destitute in the emirate.
The traditional chiefs raised the money on Thursday after an emergency meeting at the palace of the Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Kabir Danbaba.
The emir, who presided over the meeting, said the aim was to encourage wealthy individuals to contribute to the endowment fund set up to support the poor, especially orphans, in the area.
Danbaba noted that 4,000 out of the 8,000 orphans and less privileged persons registered by the state Zakkat and Endowment Board, reside within the emirate.
He said: “Despite the huge number of beneficiaries in this emirate, the collection figure has always been a source of serious concern.
“I am therefore appealing to wealthy individuals and illustrious sons and daughters of this emirate to contribute generously to the endowment fund, so that the needy and less privileged could benefit from their God-given resources,”
Danbaba added that the emirate council had set up a high powered committee to reach out to wealthy indigenes of the area living within and outside the country to donate towards the initiative.
The Emir said all contributions collected would be remitted to the state Zakkat board for distribution to the less privileged members of the society.
