Three unemployed men were on Wednesday arraigned in a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, for allegedly stealing two cell phones worth N600,000 from a woman.
The police charged Joseph Amata, 26, Joshua Emmanuel, 25, and Ikechukwu Otu, 24, with criminal conspiracy and extortion.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Sunday Iyakwo, told the court that the complainant, Ahmed Allayo of Plot 824 Idris Ibrahim crescent, Jabi, Abuja reported the matter at the Gwagwalada police station on October 18.
Iyakwo said that Amata criminally conspired with Emmanuel and Otu and attacked the complainant’s wife.
He said that the defendants forcefully snatched her Apple cell phone worth N150,000 and an H1-pad cell phone worth N450,000.
The prosecution also said that the defendants stole N198,000 cash, bank ATM card, eye supplement and organic cream worth N45,000.
He said during investigation one MTN SIM card was recovered in their possession.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 292 of the Penal Code.
Chief Magistrate Aliyu Shafa admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Shafa ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must present their driver’s license or national identification.
He said that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means in the same amount and adjourned the case until Dec. 15 for hearing.
