The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi, have charged Nigerians on the need to promote peace and unity.
The royal fathers also tasked Nigerians to continuously foster love as well engender peaceful coexistence in the interest of the country.
The duo made the statement during the official commissioning of the Wings Schools Central Mosque, Iwo, Osun State.
The monarchs described love and unity as the only way to national growth, attributing the myriads of challenges facing Nigeria to the absence of love.
The Sultan said the time has come for Nigerians to form a united front and extend love to one another regardless of socio-economic, religious and political differences.
Alhaji Abubakar, who frowned at the notion of attributing religion to people’s behaviour, said religion should not be held responsible for people’s actions and inactions.
The Sultan explained that human behaviour in most cases does not represent their religious doctrines, adding that Islam for instance should not be held responsible for Muslims’ actions.
Abubakar said Islam is a religion of peace that preaches love, unity and brotherliness, adding that henceforth, people should stop attributing Islam to anti-social anomalies.
He urged Nigerians, especially the Muslim faithful, to love their neighbours and fellow human beings as they love themselves irrespective of political or religious differences as enshrined in the Holy Quran as well as practices of Holy Prophet Muhammed.
In the same vein, Oba Akanbi called on Nigerians to see themselves as brothers and sisters in whatever they do, adding that nothing great can ever be achieved in total disintegration.
Oba Akanbi, who described love as the only mechanism to fast-track socio-economic development and political sustainability, called on Nigerians to show high sense of compassion and affection to one another in all circumstances.
Akanbi, who used the occasion to enumerate his landmark achievements, disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to equip the newly built hospital in Iwo with state-of-the-art facilities from Canada.
The traditional ruler revealed his commitment to take the ancient town to greater heights.
He said he is committed to bringing sports competitions back to the town.
Oba Akanbi said plans are ongoing to facilitate the establishment of a Study Centre of the National Open University in the town, noting that many successes have been recorded since his inception in the last two months.
