The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation on Friday said it would spend N4 billion in the construction of hostels for Internally Displaced Persons in 24 states of the federation.
The committee’s Deputy Secretary, Malam Umar Gulani, made this known at foundation laying ceremony of two blocks of IDPs’ hostels in Shendam, Plateau State.
Gulani said the committee would build two-block of hostels and sink 10 boreholes in each of the camps.
He said: “Each of the blocks in upland state will cost N76 million while those in riverine states would cost N86 million.
“That means two blocks in upland will cost N156 million, while two in the riverine will cost N172 million.
“There will be no delay on account of funds because all the money is ready and secured in the bank.”
Gulani disclosed that the committee had paid 30 per cent of the contract sum to contractors selected for the job, while the balance would be released as soon as certificates for payments were ready.
The deputy secretary explained that the committee was a private sector initiative supported by Alhaji Aliko Dangote and co-chaired by Chief Olisa Ogbakoba.
He said all the funds were raised through donations by individuals and corporate bodies.
Alhaji Alhassan Barde, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, commended the committee for the gesture.
Barde said the state was among the worst hit by the 2012 flood, a situation which prompted the state government to immediately release the piece of land to the committee for the project.
He said: “Based on that, the committee has awarded contract for the rehabilitation of five boreholes and the construction of 10 new solar-powered boreholes in 10 local governments areas.
“I want to on behalf of Plateau Government appreciate the committee for considering the state among the first to benefit from the project.”
Alex Na’antuam, the Chairman ofShendam Local Government Area, also thanked the committee for citing the project in Shendam and pledged to support its completion.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the committee was inaugurated by former President Goodluck Jonathan after the 2012 flood disaster, which led to massive loss of lives, livestock and properties.
