No fewer than 20 suspected robbers were arrested by policemen from different divisions at the Ajegunle area of Lagos State, after the bandits robbed and shot dead a resident.
The deceased, identified as Richard Ebegbune, from Delta State, was shot dead at Omoniyi Street on Sunday.
Ebegbune was said to have left his residence at Adedayo Street to visit his friends at Omoniyi Street when he was killed.
A resident said that the bandits, who were of unknown numbers, wore face masks, adding that many residents were injured in the robbery operation.
The police had so far arrested no fewer than 20 suspects in connection with the murder of Ebegbune.
One of the residents, who simply wished to be known as Dele, residing at Market Street, said that the robbers pointed guns at him and dispossessed him of his two phones and the N5,500 he had on him.
While claiming that the robbers seemed to be over 100, Dele said: “They dispossessed many people of their money, mobile phones and other valuables in some streets in the area. They looted shops as people abandoned their goods and took to their heels. I must commend the police who came and chased them away. The divisional police officer of Amukoko, Superintendent of Police (SP) Nosiru risked his life as he chased after the hoodlums.”
Another resident, Jamiu, said that when the masked men came to Imam Street, there was pandemonium as the residents scampered in different directions.
Jamiu said he was shocked to hear DPO Nosiru ordering his policemen not to fire, even as the hoodlums were firing at them.
“The DPO said he didn’t want his policemen to shoot innocent citizens,” recalled Jamiu.
A source at the Ifelodun Local Council Development Area disclosed that the chairman of the area, Chief Fatai Ajidagba, commended Nosiru over the way he handled the situation and routed the bandits.
The Divisional Police Officer of Layeni Police Station, a Chief Superintendent of Police Chijioke Ndu, also led a team of policemen to the scene to assist Amukoko division before the Area ‘B’ Apapa Commander, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ndubueze Anene, led teams of policemen to the scene.
