Police arraign 51-year-old woman for allegedly stealing N700,000

A woman, Olayemi Mohammed, who allegedly stole N700,000 from a supposed client under the pretence of selling a piece of land to him was on Tuesday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court.
Mohammed, 51, a trader residing at Abebi Ejigbo in Osun State is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Ihiehie Lucky, told the court that the offences were committed at Ketu sometime in January 2012.
Lucky said the complainant reported that sometime in January 2011, the accused then residing at Ijede area of Ikorodu, advertised a land at Oke-eletu Bus Stop, Ijede Road.
Luky said: “Somebody introduced him to the accused and she agreed to sell the plot of land to the complainant at the rate of N1.2 million.
“They agreed that the complainant would pay installmentally at the end of every month the sum of N200,000.
“He paid N200,000 at the end of Febuary and March and in April he paid the sum of N300,000 all totaling N700,000.”
Lucky said that immediately after April, she was nowhere to be found again until 2015 when the complainant was able to trace her to Osun State.
He said: “She was later arrested in Osun State and brought down to Ketu Police Station in Lagos State.
“During police interrogation, she denied selling any land or collecting any money for land.”
The offences contravened Sections 312 and 285 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The Magistrate, Sule-Amzat, admitted her to bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties in like sum each whose addresses must be verified.
The court adjourned the case to December 21.
