The Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday held a rally tagged “Active Participation for All in Democracy”, to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria has set aside May 29 annually to celebrate democracy.
NAN reports that PDP members walked through major streets of Lagos and eventually entered the party’s state secretariat at GRA, Ikeja, where they held the rally.
Chief Ishola Filani, the party’s Chairman, Caretaker Committee, South-West, told newsmen that the PDP would do everything possible to win the 2015 governorship poll in Lagos State.
Filani said that the party would bring governance closer to the people of Lagos State.
He said: “Democracy is about participation of all.
“Its dividends should not be exclusive.”
He also said that the party would make life more meaningful to the common man.
On the suspension of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State by the PDP, Filani said: “Amechi was suspended to give room for the disciplinary committee to carry out its investigations without interference.
“It is even for his own good.”
A 2011 PDP governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Owolabi Salis, said that Nigeria was still bedevilled by ethnic and religious crises.
“There is an urgent need to reform our democratic process now to be beneficial to all,” Salis said.
Salis said that the rally was aimed at sensitising residents of Lagos State to the need to vote for PDP in 2015.
He said: “Lagos is a PDP state, but due to crisis in the party in the past, it was lost to opposition.
“PDP, no doubt, will win 2015 polls in Lagos.”
The Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the party, Taofik Gani, said that the rally was the high point of a week-long activity of the party to mark the democracy day.
