Osun begins distribution of computer learning tablets to students

In its resolve to take public education to a greater height in the state, the Osun State Government has commenced the distribution of the Computer Tablets of Learning (Opon Imo) to students of government-owned secondary schools in the state.
The distribution of the tablets started at the Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo on Monday with 385 students in the Senior Secondary School 2 each receiving the technological device.
The project, an initiative of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, is specially designed for students of public secondary schools in the state to improve their performance in internal and external examinations.
The device, according to the governor, would make the students to be ICT compliant as well as enable them to compete with their peers all over the world in terms of educational standard.
The device had earlier been test-run through the students of the school, a situation that encouraged the Opon-Imo project team to start the distribution from the same school.
It contains e-book library, comprising of text books, study tips, integrated test zone made up of past questions and answers, solution to standard examinations questions and virtual classroom, where comprehensive school notes with illustrations and worked examples for the 17 subjects of science, art and commercial were configured.
Handling over the device to the students, the Principal, Ataoja School of Science, Dr. Adeagbo Taiwo, expressed optimism that the device will help in teaching and learning and enhance the performance of students.
Taiwo said: “We can now see that Opon Imo is real and we are happy because this has never happened anywhere in Nigeria, except Osun.
“We are ready to work with it, as our governor has done his part in making teaching easier for us.
“This is a modern trend in education and I am sure it will work.”
To ensure the durability of the device, she said that the school management would educate the student on how to handle it properly and educate the parents on how to take care of the device at home.
The distribution is expected to continue across the schools in the state ahead of the public presentation of the device very soon.
The governor had at various fora said that his administration was poised to ensure that the standard of education is taken to a level that would make pubic schools the toast of all education-loving parents and children.
The device compliments a whole lot of other projects in the education sector in the state under the project code-named O’School.
This has seen to the commencement of the construction of new modern classrooms across the state, all aimed at replacing the ramshackle structures that dot the schools.
