Former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has hailed the Supreme Court judgment which declared Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress winner of the 2019 governorship election in the state.
This is even as some stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state described the judgment as “a rape of democracy”.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Supreme Court nullified election of former Governor Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP and declared Uzodinma winner of the election.
Okorocha, who is representing Imo West Senatorial District, said he would support Uzodinma’s government to succeed.
Okorocha, who disclosed this through a statement issued to NAN by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, said the judgment represented the choice of Imo people.
The statement read in part: “I want to congratulate Hope Uzodinma for his victory at the Supreme Court and we will all work together to ensuring that his government succeeds.
“This is an indication of a new hope in Imo, everybody must remain calm and watch Uzodinma unfolds what he has for Imo.”
In another development, some PDP members have described the Supreme Court judgment as a rape of democracy.
Speaking with NAN shortly after the news of the judgment, a PDP Woman Leader and retired civil servant, Dora Nnawuchi, said the judgment did not only rape democracy, but a way of causing crises in Imo State.
Nnawuchi said: “See how everybody is feeling moody over the judgment and from the look of the people you could see that the state has been thrown into mourning.”
She added that the judgment was a calculated attempt by the ruling APC to take Imo State back to years of backwardness.
Another PDP leader in Imo State, Celestine Ubalaka, described the judgment as “unfair and senseless.
“Every Imo person knew that Uzodinma lost the election.
“Imo people did not vote for him because we knew he cannot deliver.
“It is unfortunate that judiciary has been made the commonest institution in Nigeria without value.”
NAN reports that security presence was seen at strategic places in the state to forestall any disorder that may occur as a result of the judgment.
