Former President Olusegun Obasanjo among other stakeholders are to participate in a three-day national conference in Ibadan, Oyo State aimed at producing credible leaders and lasting peace ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Prof. Isaac Albert, the Chairman of the organizing committee, told the media that the conference was organised by the Peace and Conflict Studies Programme of the University of Ibadan in collaboration with Centre of Human Security, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Albert said Obasanjo, as a former Nigeria leader, would share his experiences with the delegates as the chairman of the occasion, while Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State would deliver the keynote speech on the theme of the conference.
Other leaders invited are the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi; legislators; and political party leaders, while the duo of Prof. Peter Okebukola, the Director for Centre for Human Security at Obasanjo’s library, and Prof, Isaac Adewole, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, would co-host the conference.
Albert said that besides the politicians, 63 academic papers have been received from different papers presented from all over the world, especially experts in peace and conflict studies.
He said the three-day conference will hold from June 9 to 11 at the Trenchard Hall of the University of Ibadan.
He said the conference was put together to proffer solution and debate on how to produce credible leaders for Nigeria as well as review the leadership system and structure in the country.
“We are convinced that the crisis in Nigeria has to do with leadership, as our leaders have not been able to hold the nation together in spite of our ethnic diversity and religious plurality as you have in other advanced countries,” he said.
Albert, a professor in Peace and Conflict Studies, said Nigeria needs an acceptable leadership system capable of providing lasting peace and development for the country.
As a member of the ongoing national conference, he said the combination of the old and the young at the conference has turned out to be a blessing for the country.
Albert said that papers presented at the Leadership and Peace Conference would be collated with recommendations sent to the policy makers for implementation.
