Following the result of the B sample of Chika Amalaha’s test on Friday, which showed that the Nigerian took banned drug at the games, the National Sports Commission has withdrawn the $7,000 given to the athlete as her reward for the gold medal feat at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland.
The Director General of the National sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye, made the position known.
Elegbeleye was, however, quick to add that the action is not in anyway meant to treat the young athlete as a lopper.
He said: “It’s very unfortunate that we have to withdraw the bonus since we all know that she must have plans for the sum when she gets back to Nigeria.
“At the same time, we must not be seen to be encouraging negativism in sports.
“But she was paid her camping and training allowance.”
Meanwhile, the Sports Minister and the Chairman of the NSC, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has expressed sadness over Amalaha’s predicament, saying the ministry will review the situation after the Games.
Danagogo said: “I am sad with her predicament.
“That is one girl with a lot of potentials to excel and when this problem came up, I called her to know what happened but it’s so unfortunate that she dabbled into what she did.
“She told me she took it to reduce her weight and the coaches who are supposed to monitor may not have done their job as well.
“Before now, I have spoken with the DG on the need to send her to school in Europe or America where she can further develop her talent.
“When we get back home, we are going to review the case, including the role of the Sports Ministry’s anti dope unit.
“What happened is a big embarrassment and must not be condoned.
“Whatever punishment, we will abide by it and think of how she must move on in her career.”
