The MFM Football Club of Lagos suffered a heavy defeat by host, Rivers United, who thrashed them 4-1 in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League.
The match was played on Sunday at Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Though the visitors scored first through Austin Ogunye in the 29th minute, the host equalised through Guy Kuemian in the 30th minute.
Bernard Ovoke, Kuemian and Yusuf Jaiyola scored for United in the 38th, 66th and 68th minutes respectively to hand the visitors a disappointing result in the Garden City.
Fidelis Ilechukwu, MFM Coach, told sportswriters after the game that his team had never been defeated with such a margin in the league.
Ilechukwu said he acknowledged the fact that Rivers United was a better side with a player like Bernard Ovoke.
He said: “I have never had this kind of defeat.
“It is really devastating, but it is just the reality.
“I appreciate the fact that Rivers United is a team with experienced players and that they are among the top best in the league.”
Rivers United Coach, Stanley Eguma, expressed delight with the comfortable victory by his team despite conceding the first goal at home in the game.
Eguma said: “I am happy that we won with comfortable goals margin, but it is not the end of the campaign.
“We still have enough games to go.
“I appreciate my boys for this victory.
“It was not easy but they were focused.
“We are going to prepare ahead for other games.
“We won against MFM but they are the first to put the ball in our net.
“So, they played well.
“I also appreciate them.”
