The President, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, on Tuesday advised public officers against using tax payers’ resources to seek medical care abroad.
Enabulele told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja after the Presidential Summit on Universal Health Coverage, that tax payers’ money should be channelled toward building more healthcare facilities.
He said that there was a need to restore confidence in the healthcare system and therefore called on governments at all levels to intensify the political will to strengthen the system.
He said: “Like we have always say, government must be alive to ensure that those public officers who want to go abroad in the name of medical care do not do that at the expense of tax payers’ resources.
“Resources that should be allocated toward building more health care facilities and infrastructure in our country.”
Enabulele commended the Federal Government for the summit, describing it as “a bold first step toward ensuring that Nigerians have access to quality healthcare facilities”.
He added: “This bold step, if really pursued, will substantially revolutionise the health landscape of our country.”
The president of the NMA expressed optimism that universal health coverage, if achieved, would solve many of the challenges in the healthcare system.
