The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters on Tuesday raised the alarm over new tricks deployed by human traffickers to get at their victims.
It said human traffickers now recruit victims in the name of scholarship award by foreign universities.
The Benin Zonal Commander of the agency, Cordelia Ebinringa, said this at a capacity building workshop for law enforcement agencies on modern trend and pattern of human trafficking and child labour in Benin, Edo State.
Represented by Nduka Nwawene, Ebinringa stressed the need for synergy between NAPTIP and other security agencies to combat human trafficking.
She urged stakeholders to have sufficient knowledge on emerging trends in trafficking in persons with a view to curb their activities.
According to her, there is no wisdom in fighting 21st century crime with 19th century war tools.
She said: “The purpose of this workshop is principally to bridge this knowledge, mainly in the area of intelligence gathering.
“It will also avail us the knowledge of new techniques employed by human traffickers in perpetrating the crime of human trafficking.”
