The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control said on Monday that it had commenced a nationwide assessment of the quality of sachet water.
Ibrahim Jimoh, the Director of Special Duties of NAFDAC, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the agency had already introduced modern mobile laboratory equipment for the exercise.
Jimoh said that the equipment was used for onsite physic-chemical microbiological test analysis, which helped to check if water being sold met safety standards.
The director said the agency had already carried out the exercise in Nasarawa State and was currently doing same in Abuja.
According to him, the agency will also ensure that it penetrates most water industries in all parts of the country.
He said: “We are still trying to build on the latest technology.
“Recently, we have introduced another technology called modern mobile laboratory equipment used for testing the quality of water.
“You will recall that it was flagged off in Abuja about three months ago and right now the mobile laboratory for testing water is already working.
“We have used it in scanning and testing water.
“We will move all over the federation to test the quality of water sold to the public.”
Jimoh said the essence of testing sachet water was to safeguard the health of Nigerians by ensuring the safety of the water people drank.
The agency advised the public to always check for NAFDAC registration number on packaged water before buying.
