Facts have emerged on why the representative of Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, is moving from one crisis to another.
Melaye, who is a right hand man of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, started stepping on toes immediately Saraki emerged as the head of the National Assembly in “controversial” circumstances.
Many senators now regard Melaye as the “undertaker” in the Senate, who facilitated the “elimination” of some of the perceived enemies of Saraki.
The removal of Senator Ali Ndume as the Senate Leader and his suspension for six months as was believed to be largely the handiwork of the singing senator.
Ndume as that time accused Melaye of collaborating with Saraki to suspend him.
The removal of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum was also facilitated by the “Ajekun iya ni o je” crooner.
Adamu was accused of “embezzling” N70 million belonging to the forum.
Many senators complained of foul play in Adamu’s removal.
But their complaint mattered very little as Melaye, who is also known for his “kilo tun ku ti o se” singing senator had his way.
Also, the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was coordinated by Melaye, who came under Point of Order that his right and privileges have been breached by the Delta State senator over statements credited to him in the media that the perception of the reordering of sequence of elections is targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
Melaye demanded the probe of Omo-Agege, which later led to his suspension for three months.
In addition, Senator Oluremi Tinubu also had her own taste from Melaye’s “blind” battles as he assaulted the former First Lady of Lagos State inside the Red Chamber during a closed door session.
Melaye had said it is impossible for him to impregnate Tinubu, who represents Lagos Central Senatorial District because she has already reached menopause.
The acclaimed anti-corruption crusader also engaged his state Governor, Yahaya Bello, in a major battle.
At a particular point in time in the Senate, the issue of the Kogi State Governor was a subject of debate.
Melaye also had a running battle with the boss of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, over the issue of his appearing in uniform, and ensured the non-confirmation of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.
In addition, Melaye had been crying foul over a suit filed against him by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, for misleading the police over an alleged assassination attempt on his life in April 2017.
Melaye is also alleged to have falsely accused Edward Onoja, the Chief of Staff to Governor Bello, of attempting to assassinate him.
Melaye who is currently on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja under the watch of armed policemen, is accused of illegal possession of arms and other crimes.
But Melaye survived an attempt over the weekend to recall him from the Senate.
The verification of signatures conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission came back a failed attempt as most of the signatures were found to be those of dead people and forged.
