A 20-year-old man, Shafiu Abdulrahman, has pleaded guilty before a Federal High Court in Lagos to a charge of drug trafficking preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The defendant, who is unemployed, is standing trial before Justice Yellin Bogoro.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
After his plea, the Prosecutor, Jeremiah Aernan, sought for a date to review the facts of the case before the court
The court, consequently, adjourned the case until March 28 for a review of facts.
According to the charge, the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 10, 2021, on Victoria Island in Lagos.
The prosecutor said that the defendant was arrested on the said date for unlawfully dealing in 1.7kg of cannabis sativa, which was recovered from his possession.
He said that cannabis is classified as a narcotic, just like cocaine, heroin and other hard drugs and psychotropic substances, which usage is restricted by law.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
Drug trafficking attracts up to a term of life imprison as penalty, if convicted.
