A dietician with the Garki Hospital, Abuja, Yemisi Olowookere, on Friday said that insufficient vitamin A in food could result in blindness and increased viral infections.
Olowookere told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that Vitamin A rich foods were essential for body development and growth.
She said that by consuming vitamin A rich foods, it would serve as food supplements, adding that it would also help to keep the skin and immune system healthy.
“Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, is required for growth, necessary for vision, gene transcription, boosting immune function and great skin health,” she said.
According to her, the foods that contain vitamin A are liver, cod liver fish oil, carrots, yam, pumpkin, squash, leafy green vegetables, apricot and pawpaw, among others.
Olowookere named other vitamin A rich foods to include red pepper, chilli powder, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens and dried herbs.
She, however, advised that excessive consumption of vitamin A could result in jaundice, nausea, loss of appetite, irritability, vomiting as well as hair loss.
