Ikorodu killing: Killer cop arrested, as IG vows justice will be served

Following the continuous protest embarked upon by commercial bike riders and residents of the Ikorodu area of Lagos State following the killing of two persons and inflicting of bullet wounds on a lady, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Thursday called for calm, revealing that one of the killer cops had been arrested.
Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, Abubakar promised that justice would be served, adding that the police officer linked with the killing of the late Olalekan Ajayi, one of the victims, had been arrested, detained and is presently undergoing investigation.
Trouble started on Tuesday after a member of the Rapid Response Squad, the security outfit of the Lagos State Government, opened fire on a commercial bike rider, killing him.
The bullet also injured a woman.
Eyewitness account claimed that the trigger happy cop, simply identified as Haruna, was in the company of three of his colleagues.
The four of them had gone to effect arrest of the bike rider for flouting a traffic law.
Haruna was said to have opened fire on the bike rider after he noticed that the deceased was trying escaping.
A passer-by, Modikat Babatunde, was also hit by the bullet.
The woman was shot on the hand.
The shooting and killing of Lekan and wounding of Babatunde, provoked anger and led to a protest.
The protest caused serious commotion around Ikorodu.
On Wednesday, the protesters continued their protest, disrupting commercial activities.
The mob marched to Sagamu Road Police Station and attempted to set it on fire.
But the attempt was resisted by policemen drafted from different formations.
It was gathered that after the policemen failed to disperse the mob, they opened fire, apparently to scare away the protesters, but one of the policemen shot into the crowd, killing another civilian.
A policeman was also attacked by the protesters and the violent protest spilled to Odongunyan and Ita Oluwo areas of Ikorodu.
Angry motorbike riders repeatedly regrouped even after being dispersed by policemen.
Mba said on Thursday: “The IGP condoles with the bereaved relations, friends and colleagues of the late Olalekan Ajayi. While promising that the Force will do its utmost best to ensure that the investigation into the death is properly done and concluded in record time, the IGP calls on all aggrieved persons to remain calm and patient. He has therefore directed the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State to take proper steps to ensure that justice is expeditiously done on the matter.”
