The Oyo State House of Assembly has commenced investigations into the alleged shortfall recorded in the number of pupils approved for feeding under the Federal Government sponsored school feeding programme in the state.
The assembly at its plenary in Ibadan on Tuesday mandated its Committee on Education, Science and Technology to look into the allegation.
The directive followed a motion by Olusegun Ajanaku, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, and seconded by Gbenga Oyekola.
The motion was entitled: “To safeguard the school Feeding Programme and Prevent its Collapse.”
According to Ajanaku, the intervention programme of the Federal Government may fail if the attendant challenges were not quickly tackled.
Ajanaku said: “A situation where a food vendor is expected to supply food to 52 pupils and receives payment for 18 pupils calls for concern.
“It is now becoming rampant and the probable effect is untimely the death of the initiative if steps are not taken by this house to resolve it.”
Oyekola said the programme was in synergy with the state’s initiative to boosts agricultural production and tackle the problem of malnutrition in the state.
The Speaker of the assembly, Michael Adeyemo, directed the committee to invite the Commissioner for Education and Permanent Secretary in the ministry for in-depth investigation.
Adeyemo also directed the committee to report back to the house on its findings within a week.
