A consultant neurologist, Dr. Njideka Okubadejo, said on Monday in Lagos that professionals such as welders exposed to iron fluid, were prone to Parkinson’s disease.
Okubadejo, who works with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, told the News Agency of Nigeria that Parkinson’s disease was the second commonest neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system.
The online medical dictionary describes Parkinson’s disease as: “A disorder of the brain that leads to shaking (tremors) and difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination.”
She said: “Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of brain that mainly affects middle aged or elderly people, but sometimes it’s also seen in young people below the age of 40.
“It can affect any occupation but people who are involved in occupation relating to welding or exposure to iron fluid are more at risk.
“Parkinson’s disease is the commonest form of Parkinsonism.
“About three-quarters of Parkinsonism is due to Parkinson disease.
“But there are other conditions that can cause Parkinsonism such as repeated stroke or something called ‘multiple system atrophy’.
“It affects more men than women but the difference in the ratio is not much.
“Unfortunately, there is no cure for now for Parkinson’s disease, but there are drugs that can improve quality of life; physiotherapy and nutritional care can also help the person to remain active.”
