Normal activities have been reported at public hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory in spite of the nationwide strike embarked by the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the association commenced the indefinite industrial action on Thursday pressing for improved condition of service.
A NAN correspondent who visited the hospitals in Abuja observed that doctors were carrying out their normal duties.
A visit to the National Hospital, Wuse and Maitama District Hospitals, confirmed that patients were been attended to without any hitch.
A civil servant, Kola Adewuyi, who was in one of the hospitals, said he came to see a pathologist to get the result of a test he carried out two days earlier.
Adewuyi commended the doctors and laboratory scientists for their efficiency, expressing disbelief that there was an ongoing strike.
Similarly, it was observed at the National Hospital that there was no sign of strike by any medical or health official.
Doctors and patients were seen conducting their routine duties.
Dr. Haastrup Adetayo, the spokesman of the National Hospital, told NAN that NARD members in the hospital had no cause joining the strike as they were paid their entitlement as at when due.
NARD embarked on the industrial action due to non-payment of salaries and entitlements of its members in some secondary and teaching hospitals in the country, among other demands.
However, the association exempted its members whose salaries have been paid in full (with 100 per cent skipping) from joining the strike, while those who are getting fractions or no salaries were expected to join the strike.
