Court sends ex-Gov. Lamido to prison

A Magistrate Court in Jigawa State has remanded a former Governor of the state, Sule Lamido, in prison custody.
Lamido was arraigned on Tuesday morning before the Chief Magistrate, Usman Lamin, for incitement.
On the bail application by Lamido, the judge reserved ruling for May 4, saying the former governor should be kept in Dutse Prison till then.
The police arraigned the former governor on Tuesday over alleged inciting comments at the Chief Magistrate’s Court 2 in Dutse amid tight security.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abdul Jinjiri, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the ex-governor was brought to Dutse from Zone 1 Police Command in Kano early on Tuesday.
Another source said: “As I speak to you, we are already in Dutse for formal arraignments of the former Governor.”
Reports say the court premises had been besieged by a huge crowd, including journalists.
The police and other security agencies have been placed on alert to prevent likely protest from Lamido’s supporters.
Lamido was arrested early on April 30 for allegedly trying to disrupt local government elections in Kano through his supporters.
He was arrested at his Sharada-Kano home on Sunday and taken to Zone 1 Command of the Nigeria Police in Kano.
Lamido was alleged to have made inciting statement, calling on his supporters to disrupt the local government elections slated for July 1.
According to the police, the ex-governor’s alleged offence is contrary to Section 114 of the penal code.
