In spite of the fatal communal clashes between the two hitherto peaceful communities of Offa and Erin-Ile, the Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed has emphasized that the communities are destined to live together, stressing that the two communities should explore their differences as sources of strength and not weakness.
Ahmed said this on Wednesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while receiving the report of the Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the Erin-Ile/Offa communal crisis.
The governor called on communities prone to communal clashes to employ their proximity in strengthening their different economic potentials for development rather than the promotion of destructive tendencies.
According to the governor: “Our generation must always play critical role in advancing the course of harmony in the country as future generations would hold the present generation accountable for whatever happens.”
He said growth and development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
Ahmed, who described the presentation of the report of the judicial commission of enquiry as a giant stride towards peace in Kwara State, assured Justice Ayinla Sikiru Oyinloye and other members of the committee that their recommendations would be implemented to the letter.
The governor added that as custodians of the traditions of their people, the traditional rulers would be involved in the implementation of the recommendations of the committee.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the Erin-Ile/Offa communal crisis, Justice Ayinka Sikiru Oyinloye, said members kept faithfully to the terms of reference of the committee.
Justice Oyinloye urged the people of Offa and Erin-Ile to see beyond the report of the committee by reconditioning their minds for peace in order to avert reoccurrence of communal crisis in the future.
Justice Oyinloye, who affirmed that the report of the committee was not influenced by any external consideration, commended Governor Ahmed for giving the committee the free hand to discharge its assignments.
It would be recalled that the Kwara State Government on February 6 this year inaugurated the Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye Judicial Commission of Enquiry on Erin-Ile Offa communal crisis to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, the extent of damage to property, the number of lives lost and proffer immediate and long term measures to prevent future occurrence.
