The Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, has again been commended for his integrity and trustworthiness following the return of the Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime, to Nigeria after spending over four months out of the country due to ill-health.
Akpabio had last week told newsmen that Chime would return to the country in less than 10 days.
Similar promises by others were not fulfilled.
A Niger Delta-based socio-political group, Centre for Awareness on Good Governance, which had earlier issued a statement that the inclusion of Akpabio among the governors that visited Chime last month, cleared the air on the governor’s health, said on Thursday the governor has proved the group and in fact his followers right on his integrity as a leader.
The group’s President, Chief Ben James, said they had been vindicated for saying Akpabio towers above other governors in terms of integrity.
James said in a statement: “Chief Akpabio surprised a lot of people by saying that Chime would return to the country fit to govern within 10 days, especially at a time that Enugu State had become tensed up and we also gathered that not a few media houses doubted the photograph which the Akwa Ibom State governor took with his Rivers and Benue States counterparts in London because they were convinced that Akpabio is not a man that would toil with his integrity.
“But the return of Chime less than 10 days after Akpabio’s statement has lent credence to Akpabio’s personality as a leader that can be trusted.
“We are sure that Nigerians can now rejoice that there are still some good leaders around, whose words can be believed and not all leaders play politics with everything.
“We are therefore not surprised at the level of trust the people of Akwa Ibom State have on their governor, because of these rare qualities of integrity, truthfulness and trust which are the hallmarks of true leadership.”
“With his return to the country, we now expect normalcy to return to Enugu State.
“We also urge Nigerians to take note of credible actions of its leaders and commend them as and when due, as this will encourage other leaders to tow the path of honour and integrity.”
