Host, Rwanda, pipped Cote D’Ivoire 1-0 at the Amahoro Stadium in their 2016 African Nations Championship opener.
Defender Emery Basiyenge scored a superb free kick in the 16th minute to give his team all maximum point in front of a fully packed stadium, with President Paul Kagame and Acting FIFA President, Issa Hayatou, also watching from the stands.
All efforts the Ivorians put in to get an equalizer before half time proved abortive.
Later on in the 60th minute, Rwanda were awarded a penalty, only for Ivorian goalie Sangare Badra Ali to save Basiyenge’s chance to get a brace.
Rwanda top Group A with three points.
In the other Group A game, Morocco and Gabon settled for 0-0 draw.
