Arsenal suffered a huge injury blow on Thursday after learning Calum Chambers would be out for up to nine months following surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament.
The defender had an operation in London on Thursday morning on the left knee he damaged against Chelsea on Sunday.
Arsenal confirmed he will be absent for between six and nine months, with manager Mikel Arteta confirming the setback could force the club into the transfer market this month.
Speaking before Chambers was out of surgery, Arteta said: “It is a significant injury. We will see what the doctors say. It is not looking good.
“We are going to try to be in the market to see options that can strengthen the team. That is for sure and that is our obligation and we are going to be working on that.
“My obligation is to give my opinion and see if there are things we can improve. Obviously we have some bad injuries, like Calum a few days ago, and that is going to change our plans at the back but the reality at the moment is that we are not going to be able to do much.”
Arsenal also confirmed left back Kieran Tierney will be out for three months after surgery on the shoulder he dislocated against West Ham last month.
