Boko Haram: Nigeria, Niger to establish joint border patrol

Following the upsurge in the activities of dreaded sect, Boko Haram in Nigeria, the Nigerian Government and the Government of Niger have agreed to establish a joint border patrol.
The joint border patrol is to commence immediately to prevent the infiltration of the two countries by terrorists.
The two countries are also to equip their National Boundary Commissions with requisite logistics to ensure fast re-demarcation of the Nigeria-Niger International boundary.
These constitute part of the agreements reached between President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his Niger counterpart, Mahamadou Issoufou, during the sixth session of the High Authority of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation.
The meeting was held in Niamey, the capital of Republic of Niger.
A communique issued at the end of the session on Thursday reads: “At the sub-regional level, the Heads of States expressed their concerns over the danger brought by the international terrorism into their sub-region, namely Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, Boko Haram and other weapons and drug trafficking criminal organizations which constitute a big heat to the peace and stability within the the whole of West African region.
“The two Heads of States agreed on the immediate take off of the joint Border patrols along the border between the two countries. The two governments have also been directed to provide envisaged funds and required logistics for the exercise.
“Similarly, the two heads of state instructed the relevant authorities to provide the National Boundary Commissions of both countries with requisite logistics for the rapid completion of the re-demarcation of the Nigeria-Niger international boundary.”
