Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State said on Monday that the state government spends about 80 per cent of its revenue on civil servants’ salaries and wages.
Yuguda said this in Bauchi at the inauguration ceremony of the secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council.
Yuguda said that the government would take painstaking efforts to ensure that those who got employment with “forged documents”, including teachers, were shown the way out of the public service.
The governor decried the thinking of some members of the public who “perceive public funds as something that should be shared.”
Yuguda said: “Two days ago, I was out to monitor the environmental sanitation.
“Some youths were asking for payments before they will clear the gutters in their communities.
“But I had to educate them on the risk of flooding as well as other diseases associated with dirty environment.
“I told them that I have no money.
“I told them to either clear their gutter voluntarily or go back to their homes.
“At the end of the day, I discovered that about 90 per cent of the youths finally embarked on the sanitation in Bauchi metropolis.”
He challenged journalists to be agents of change by enlightening the public on how to sustain democracy in the country.
The National President, NUJ, Malam Garba Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the Bauchi State Government for providing the secretariat for journalists in the state.
The Chairman of Bauchi State Council of the NUJ, Malam Dahiru Mohammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the project was completed at the cost of N58 million.
