The police in Nasarawa State on Monday confirmed the killing of two members of a vigilante group in Kofar Gwari ward of Kokona Local Government Area of the state.
The police also said the attack left two others with various degrees of injury.
ASP Ismaila Umar-Numan, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kokona.
NAN reports that the incident happened when some members of the vigilante group in the area were having their meeting on how to address the spate of killings and kidnappings.
Umar-Numan said: “We have received information this morning that some members of the vigilante groups in Kokona Local Government Area were having their meeting when unknown gunmen who were fully armed came from nowhere and started shooting sporadically into the air and killed two vigilante members on the spot.
“Other two members sustained various degrees of injury and I want to call on the people of the area and the state at large to remain calm and be law abiding as police are doing their best to ensure the protection of lives and property in the state.”
The police spokesman said the corpses of the deceased had been handed over to their family members who buried them according to Islamic rites.
Umar-Numan urged the public to always give vital information to the police in order to curtail criminal activities in the state and the country at large in the interest of peace and national development.
