The Embassy of Thailand and the University of Jos, Plateau State have taken steps towards harnessing the potentials of agricultural produce in Nigeria, particularly in areas of rice and potatoes productions.
Already, a delegation of experts from Kasetsart University, representing the Government of Thailand, have arrived the Tin City of Jos, the Plateau State capital, to explore possible ways of turning around agriculture in Nigeria
The vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, while receiving the delegation on Thursday in his office, said that Plateau State is rich in the production of rice and Irish potatoes.
Mafuyai said at the signing of the MOU that Southern Plateau has arable land for rice production.
He estimated this to be over 1,000 hectares.
He solicited the collaboration of Thailand towards building maximum cooperation that will boost strong synergy.
According to him, the University of Jos community is ready to partner in the area of exploration of greater food security in the country, with the introduction Department of Agricultural Science.
Mafuyai stressed that the academic exchange of idea will be a platform for Plateau State to export vegetable and irish potatoes, which is in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Earlier, the Director of the Centre for Advancement Office, Yakubu Gomos, had said the office encourages the promotion of local and international collaboration in the advancement of new and acquired technology.
Gomos added that the university community was ready to explore good relationship with Thailand in the agriculture sector.
Thailand’s Deputy Head of Mission in Nigeria, Sakeson Sarobol, promised to ensure that his country commenced all the necessary arrangements for the take-off in trade and international businesses in Nigeria.
