The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency says it has achieved 75 per cent success in its ongoing road rehabilitation of the more than 3,000km of federal roads in Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe States.
Boaz David, the North-East Zonal Coordinator of the agency in charge of the states, who made this known to newsmen in Bauchi on Monday, said the efforts were geared toward making the roads safer.
According to David, the agency has rehabilitated 55 per cent of the 1,316km federal roads in Adamawa State, 80 per cent of the 1,280km roads in Bauchi State and 90 per cent of the 521km roads in Gombe State.
He said: “Part of our mandate is to ensure that all federal roads across the country are routinely maintained.
“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure that all our roads are pothole free, safe and pliable.”
David urged drivers to desist from speeding and reckless driving, especially this yuletide season, to avoid road crashes and possible loss of lives.
He equally warned residents against road abuse such as burning of tyres on the road, dumping of refuse, cutting of road and erection of illegal speed bumps.
He added: “The Federal Government is spending huge amount of money on the construction and maintenance of roads across the country.
“Such practices greatly undermine government’s efforts at providing good and quality roads to road users.”
The coordinator said that the Federal Roads Committee on Surveillance and Action against Road Abuse was still in place to prosecute any person caught abusing the roads.
He, therefore, called on members of the public to assist the committee with information on road abuse, accidents and car break-down for quick intervention.
