The Jigawa State Consumer Protection Committee says it has confiscated 28 bags of sesame worth N728,000 from two traders, Bashari Kanoru and Auwalu Wala, in Maigatari Market.
Alhaji Faruk Abdallah, the committee’s Chairman, told News Agency of Nigeria in Hadejia on Thursday that Kanoru and Wala had mixed chaffs and sand with sesame in the bags to increase their weights.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the CPC is mandated by the state government to liaise with detectives to arrest traders who adulterate farm produce and arraign them before a mobile court.
Abdallah said the offenders pleaded guilty when arraigned before a mobile court presided over by Magistrate Munir Sarki in Maigatari, Maigatari Local Government Area.
Abdallah said the Magistrate, therefore, sentenced Konoru and Wala to 16 and 12 months imprisonment with an option of N100,000 and N70,000 fine respectively.
The chairman said Sarki ordered that the adulterated sesame be destroyed immediately.
He said the magistrate warned the traders that if they were arrested for similar offence in the future, he would detain them for three months before hearing their case.
The chairman said the committee would do its best to ensure that unwholesome produce were not sold to consumers.
“Traders who may want to adulterate grains must desist from that dangerous act because the long arm of the law will catch them anywhere they are,” he said.
