The Plateau State House of Assembly has condemned the recent attack by gunmen on the Kanam Divisional Police Station that claimed the life of a police officer.
This followed a motion on adjournment moved by the Assembly’s Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Gagdi, at Tuesday’s plenary.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in the wee hours of Monday, some gunmen stormed the police station and carted away seven AK47 riffles.
NAN reports that the hoodlums also freed many detainees from the station.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the incident has thrown the entire people of the area into mourning.
Gagdi said: “Kanam, as we all know, is a home of peace and hospitality; we are peaceful people who tolerate each other’s religion and way of worship.
“But the incident that erupted in the locality in the early hours of Monday is quite devastating, especially because of the life of the officer that died and the riffles carted away.
“Mr. Speaker, I want to use this medium to urge our people to be security conscious, especially now that the Boko Haram elements have been dispersed from the Sambisa forest.
“We all know the difficult terrain of the locality; it borders Bauchi and Gombe States, and I feel the exit routes between the area and the various communities in those states are very porous.
“If gunmen would come to a place like Kanam and their target is not to collect money from the rich businessmen, but the police station and riffles, then something is seriously wrong.
“So, I call on this honourable House to direct that security agents be stationed in the boarder communities. Today its Kanam tomorrow it can be other parts of the state.”
Contributing, the Minority Leader of the House, Daniel Dem, urged residents of the state not to treat security issues with levity.
According to Dem, protection of lives and property is every person’s business; hence people should be alert to complement the efforts of security agencies in ensuring total safety in the society.
After much contribution, the House directed that security agencies in the state should ensure that all exit routes in the locality were given adequate security attention in order to avert similar occurrence in future.
