Number four seed Timothy Olatunji of Ogun on Friday defeated number three seed Mesharih Abah from Bauchi State 4-0 in the table tennis competition of the 19th National Sports Festival.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in the men’s singles first round game played at the Abuja National Stadium’s Indoor Hall, Olatunji beat his opponent 11-8 11-9 11-5 11-5.
Olatunji expressed happiness after winning his first game.
He said: “I am happy that I won my first game. I am here to work hard to advance in the rankings of table tennis in the country.
“I will also work hard to make my state proud, because they have given me everything that will encourage me to succeed in this competition.’’
Abah, however, promised to work hard to win his next match.
He said: “It was obvious that my opponent is more experienced than me because I did not even manage to win a single set.
“But I will work hard to win my next match, which I don’t know yet, maybe in the doubles event. I want to make my state proud.’’
NAN also reports that the competition’s number one seed, Aruna Quadri, who is registered for Rivers, did not honour his game against Jelil Osuntoki who has consequently walked him over.
Olatunji will now face Osuntoki, who is the number two seed and from Gombe State, in the second round of the event.
The 19th edition of the NSF began on Thursday and is expected to end on December 16.
