The monarchical crisis rocking the home of the father of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, assumed a dangerous dimension on Friday.
The new twist the festering crisis took has led to the death of a youth leader, who allegedly flexed muscle with some stern looking soldiers deployed to the locality.
The Eagle Online gathered that the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and father of Okonjo-Iweala, Prof. Okonjo, was to flag off the new yam festival in his domain on Friday before security reports reached him to put it on hold.
It was further gathered that another royal family had planned to unleash mayhem at the ceremony, not because the lineage of the incumbent Obi was not duly elected but that he usurped the throne.
The planned disturbance was also to register the people’s displeasure that the daughter of the Obi (Okonjo-Iweala), despite being an international figure, failed for decades to attract development to her hometown.
Ogwashi-Uku, the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, had, for a long time not had pipe borne water.
In the last 10 years, the town has also not had electricity supply.
Although, the identity of the victim of the recent crisis could not be ascertained as at press time, The Eagle Online gathered that he was shot dead by the soldiers, even as the whereabouts of his body was not known.
Besides the dead victim, several other youths, who had gathered for the new yam festival in defiance of the security warning, were said to have sustained different degrees of injuries.
They are now recuperating at an undisclosed hospital in the council area.
The gruesome death of the victim has triggered another round of crisis in the council area, even as the father of the Minister was said to have hidden his head in the palace for fear of being mobbed.
