Zambian president to undergo medical treatment abroad

A team of medical experts treating Zambian President, Edgar Lungu, who is currently on admission at the Maina Soko military hospital in Lusaka, have recommended that the President seeks medical attention abroad.
“A team of senior doctors, comprising physicians, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, reviewed these findings and recommended immediate correction of this condition,” Amos Chanda, Lungu’s spokesman, has said.
President Lungu fell ill on Sunday while officiating at the Women’s International Day celebrations at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
He was forced to withdraw from the celebrations.
Chanda said doctors have referred him to undergo a high-tech medical procedure, which was currently unavailable in Zambia.
He said the 58-year-old Lungu has a history of achalasia.
Achalasia is a disorder of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
The condition affects the ability of the esophagus to move.
The problem was caused by damage to the nerves of the esophagus.
Chanda said tests have revealed that the condition could have led to the low sugar condition the President experienced during the Women’s Day event.
Lungu took over the reign of power on January 25, succeeding Michael Sata, who died at the age of 77 in London in October.
