Abubakar Ago, the Chairman of Yobe Desert Stars of Damaturu, on Tuesday said the team is the most successful club side in the Nigerian league at the moment.
Ago told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the team was inspired to this height following the prompt payment of the players’ remuneration.
He said: “I met the team participating in the NLO and in two years we have moved to the country’s topflight league.
“It is a huge success for us and based on records, we are the most successful team in the Nigerian league.
“For the two years I have been with the team, we have ensured that their remunerations are paid on time.
“If players are sure of their entitlements, they will be willing to play and achieve results.’’
Meanwhile, Ago who retired as a FIFA referee, described his team’s Match Day One fixture against FC Ifeanyi Ubah of Nnewi on January 14 as a big challenge.
He said: “The game will not be easy because FC Ifeany Ubah is a big club.
“Well, it is also going to be a good contest as the players love such challenge. We are equal to the task and will do our best.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the team has made a consecutive move in the country’s league in the last two seasons.
The Damaturu based club featured in the amateur Nationwide League One in the 2015/2016 season, gaining promotion to the Nigeria National League in 2016/2017.
The team will begin its campaign in the upcoming season in the Nigeria Professional Football League after finishing second in the northern conference of the NNL.
