The National Emergency Management Agency said in Lagos that a vessel carrying petrol exploded at the Atlas Cove at about 7am on Wednesday.
The Public Relations Officer of NEMA in the South West, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the explosion to the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone.
Farinloye said rescue operations were ongoing.
He said that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and other specialised agencies were also being mobilised to the high sea.
