The United Progressive Party has congratulated several political parties, including the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change and the All Progressive Grand Alliance over the decision to coalesce into the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement signed by it National Publicity Secretary Chief Ogbuehi Dike, the UPP said it believes that the coming together of political parties to form a joint party for a common objective and for electoral advantage is a welcome and healthy development.
The statement by Dike reads: “We wish to congratulate the political parties that came together to promote the formation of a joint political party to be registered with Independent National Electoral Commission as All Progressives Congress.
“We believe that the coming together of political parties to form a joint party for a common objective and for electoral advantage is a welcome and healthy development. We wish them a speedy registration process at the Independent National Electoral Commission in order to join us in developing our nation’s fledgling democracy.
“We enjoin all political parties in opposition like us at this time in our polity to canvass issues that will enhance the quality and credibility of opposition by being more constructive in our interventions and criticism of actions and policies of government.
“In the same token, we seize this opportunity to advice the People Democratic Party and the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to engage the opposition more constructively in the interest of our dear country Nigeria and her citizens. Name-calling, acerbic remarks and malicious propaganda with the concomitant counter propaganda can only heat up the polity with its destabilizing impacts on all facets of our national life.
“The emergence of APC and United Progressive Party points to a very interesting and exciting democratic encounter with the PDP in the general elections of 2015. The coast is getting clearer and portends an epic democratic showdown in which these three parties shall lock horns.
“The United Progressive Party has already by the policy decision of its National Executive Committee zoned our party presidential slot for the 2015 presidential election to the South East geo-political zone of the nation.
“We are looking forward to the 2015 presidential election when the political gladiators of these three major political parties that now stand out will traverse the length and breadth of Nigeria to canvass the high points of their political parties manifestos.
“Once again we welcome the APC on board.”
