The Consultant Pathologist at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, Benue State, Dr. Donatus Dzuachii, has cried out over the influx of corpses from crisis-wracked communities in the state.
Dzuachii said that dead bodies from the Falani/Tiv war in Gbajimba, Guma and Gwer communities had overstretched mortuary facilities at the FMC.
Dzuachii, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi on Wednesday, said the mortuary, which was designed to accommodate only 50 corpses, now had 107 corpses.
He said that 54 of the corpses had been abandoned in the mortuary in the past one year, while the remaining 53 were victims of herdsmen attacks and those who died of ailments unrelated to the attacks.
He said: “The mortuary is actually overwhelmed with corpses.
“At the moment, we have 107 corpses.
“Fifty-four unclaimed corpses while 53 corpses are victims of the ongoing crisis in Guma, Gbajimba and Gwer.
“But some of the 53 corpses are not victims of the attacks but those of people who died from other ailments.
“Most of the unclaimed corpses are accident victims, victims of cult killings or dead bodies recovered by security agencies.”
The pathologist complained that in spite of the limitation of space in the mortuary, security agencies still dropped corpses against expert advice.
Dzuachii said that the centre was planning to embark on a mass burial of the unclaimed corpses to decongest the mortuary.
