Dr. Musa Babayo, the Executive Chairman, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, on Saturday in Bauchi said the fund spent over N300 billion on transformation of tertiary institutions in the country from 2009 to date.
Babayo made the disclosure at the inauguration of Tsangaye Islamiya Model School in Buzaye town, Bauchi State.
He said the amount was spent on provision of infrastructure and training of lecturers, with a view to prepositioning the education sector for better performance.
He added that more than 8,000 lecturers in tertiary institutions had been sent abroad to pursue Master’s and Doctorate degree programmes during the period under review.
The chairman said more than 800 beneficiaries had already completed their programmes, returned to the country and currently adding value to education system in the country.
He commended the Federal Government for supporting and funding the construction of 39 Islamic model schools across the country.
Babayo said the government’s action was a clear testimony of its intention to integrate the almajiris, one of the most vulnerable groups in Nigeria, into the conventional education system for a better future.
He explained that based on the Memorandum of Understanding between the federal and state governments, the Federal Government would build and equip the Tsangaya (Qur’anic) schools and hand them over to state governments.
He noted that the state governments were expected to manage and replicate them, to create room for the more than nine million almajiris across the country to have sound education.
Alhaji Sani Suleiman, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, commended the Federal and Bauchi State Governments for their initiative in the education sector.
He gave the assurance that the National Assembly would continue to contribute its quota toward positive transformation of the education sector.
