A 40-year-old teacher, Olusegun David, was on Wednesday docked in a Sabo, Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding a real estate agent of N15 million.
David, who resides in Ifo Area in Ogun State, was charged with two counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretences.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting lawyer with the Lagos State Police Command Criminal Investigation Department, Williams Ologun, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in March at Agbelekale area of Abule Egba, Lagos.
Ologun said the defendant sold a family land to the complainant, Olatunbosun Adebowale, for N15 million without the consent of the other family members.
He said that when the complainant started work on the land, the family members of the defendant prevented him from continuing work, saying they were not aware of the sale.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 314 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 314 is punishable by 15 years imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences, while Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for the offence of conspiracy.
Chief Magistrate O.Y. Adefope admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She further ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation with both residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
Adefope ruled that both sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until December 15 for mention.
